Sedona, Arizona

April 22 - 28, 2007

Sunday -  the drive from Phoenix to Sedona....

Saguaro cactus

Possible realty investment

Downtown Sedona - what a view!

Casa Sedona B&B

Monday - hiked to Brins Mesa. It snowed on us several times during the hike....

This area was burned from a fire last year.

View of Mormon Canyon

Manzanita bushes

We found this slot between two major mesas

The red rock just crumbles in your hand

Tuesday - hiked to Devil's Bridge and Cathedral Rock....

Devils Bridge

A very dramatic and picturesque arch

Lana standing on the arch

A boulder up the mountain a short way from Devil's Bridge. Lana named it mushroom rock.

Neat cloud shadows

'Balance Rock' as viewed from the hike out

Cathedral Rock

Scampering around the back side of Cathedral Rock

The sandstone is very porous so it's great for traction. It was quite easy to get up the drainage quickly

'Buddha Beach'

Wednesday - Jim went mountain biking in the morning and we hiked to Doe Mesa in the afternoon...

Rode trails around Bell Rock - awesome!

The penalty for wrecking is landing in either a cactus or yucca plant.

Taken on Chicken Point on the Llama Trail

One of the many washes to ride

Doe Mesa

Cool lizard we saw on the trail

Thursday - Bear Mountain and Bell Rock

Bear Mountain

Looking down into Fay Canyon

Jim wishing the red rock wasn't so crumbly - no rock climbing in Sedona on the red sandstone

Nice picture of the terrain on the way up, as well as Doe Mesa in the background

Bell Rock

We scrambled up a drainage as high as we could go.

The upper part of Bell Rock

View from our perch. The town below is the Village of Oak Creek. In the distance and center of picture is Humphrey's Peak, highpoint of AZ.

Stunning view of Courthouse Butte

A rainbow appeared while we were up on Bell Rock - cool!

Storm clouds hanging close by - Not cool! - So we got down in a hurry.

Courthouse Butte, next to Bell Rock. It is massive.

Friday - Fay Canyon

A supposedly easy hike which we converted into an adventure. We climbed up several hundred feet to a natural arch, and then climbed on top of the arch. The canyon is not large by western standards, but it has two 'fork' canyons near its end which HAD to be explored....

The arch, about a 1/2 mile into the canyon on the right.

Bottom of the arch. Swallows were constantly flying in/out of nest under the arch, in the rock.

Frequent sightings of lizards on the rocks

Lana on top of the arch. Not terribly narrow but lots of loose rock.

Probably the coolest picture I've ever taken. I had just put the zoom lens on and told Lana it would be cool if the hummingbird came back....He did.
